Three sisters run the last commercial radio station on an island slated for evacuation. As the broadcast towers come down one by one, they take turns telling the story of how they got here — and who gets to decide when it ends.

The transmitter hummed at a frequency only Del could hear anymore, she said, though none of us believed her until the night the power failed and the hum kept going anyway. We sat in the dark control room and let her be right about something, for once, because it cost us nothing and the water was already at the door.
